Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a Sunday’s contest at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
