Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog Following Diwali
As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" category.
Alarming Air Quality Readings
Several parts of Delhi registered an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level set by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x exceeding healthy levels.
Firecracker Restrictions and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather sets in.
Yet recently, the recently formed local leadership appealed to the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – previously questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Judicial Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, the court approved the appeal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Many air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to declining pollution levels in Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Issue
The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a significant challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.
Around Diwali, the levels of hazardous particulate matter in the environment has been found to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak records ever recorded in Beijing, which was once viewed as the globally most contaminated metropolis.
Multiple Contamination Factors
This crisis in Delhi is resulting from a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, dust, building projects, garbage fires and haze from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, rural residents routinely set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that becomes contained over the capital as colder air descends.
Health and Financial Toll
The economic and health toll on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to various studies.
The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths each year in Delhi.
