This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.
We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving one another.
A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
